Believe me, for anyone who has written a book, there's nothing more exciting than the day it's published and it can be shared with the public. (It's a lot like giving birth, except no stitches, no diapers and no one to send to college in 18 years - a lot of work and the source of much pride!)
So let me be among the first to wish my friend and colleague, Elizabeth Cohen, CNN's senior medical correspondent, and Empowered Patient, a hearty congratulations! Her new book, The Empowered Patient (How to Get the Right Diagnosis, Buy the Cheapest Drugs, Beat Your Insurance Company and Get the Best Medical Care Every Time) debuts tomorrow, August 10th.
And let me be among the first to suggest to YOU that you buy her book, read it, and embrace what she teaches us all about being empowered patients.
Among those of us in regular, professional, touch with Elizabeth, there is the expected excellence in her book. Her weekly Empowered Patient vignettes on CNN are always informative, and her articles online provide additional support to what she teaches us. I've blogged about them many times before - we have all learned from them. You'll find some of them, and a lot more, in her book.
But there are some secrets revealed in her new book, too. I was stunned to read about the experience she suffered alongside her newborn daughter, Shirl - the experience that drove her to become so passionate about being empowered. I won't give it away - you need to read about it. You'll be outraged as I was, and determined to be sure it never happens to someone you love.
I've written a review of The Empowered Patient. I'll admit that I'm not particularly objective! Elizabeth and I go back several years. We help each other spread the gospel about patient empowerment. It consumes us both - in a good way.
