When Donda West, Kanye West's mother, died after plastic surgery, I thought it was very sad. We never want to think that someone who is perfectly healthy can die as a result of something so common as elective plastic surgery.
I didn't know any of the details -- until I watched the Dr. Phil show -- and there were the details / horrors / and the evidence that shows that if one iota of research had been done ahead of time, she might never have chosen that particular surgeon for resculpture. It seems Dr. Jan Adams has quite a pot-holed track record.
I can see how a non-empowered patient would have chosen this Dr. Adams for surgery. He's a "star" -- hosting TV shows on the Discovery Channel, appearing on Oprah and others. Until I saw the reality of what this doctor has done, and the absolute refusal to take any responsibility for causing Donda West's death, I would have thought that any doctor who worked for the Discovery Channel or appeared on Oprah would have some basic level of credentials. He's certainly disappeared from TV now, but not until after he butchered Donda West and others.
Is it fair to call Dr. Adams a butcher? You bet it is. Even if he is never penalized for a moment in the Donda West case, he has a track record of damage, in particular to women. One only needs to check out his record and his approach to his surgeries -- in an office in a strip mall, no less.
If you are a patient who is interested in plastic surgery, or any surgery, empower yourself with knowledge about that surgeon. Dr. Phil provided some questions to ask a plastic surgeon. You can learn much more about plastic surgery, too, and whether it is really something you're ready to submit to.
The bottom line is that one can never assume anything about any doctor, no matter whose TV show they've appeared on, or even whether you've met them before and you think they are "nice." Just because a doctor is friendly, or attractive, or has charisma, doesn't make him/her a good doctor.
You need nuts and bolts information, and recommendations from others if possible, to make the right decisions for you.
