Question: Where Does Rationing Fit Into Healthcare Reform?
The most negative concept bandied about in the debates on healthcare reform concerns healthcare rationing. Most of this is hype. So where does rationing fit into the debate on healthcare reform?
Answer:

One of the most frightening and inflammatory statements being made is that healthcare will be rationed if we reform the American healthcare system.

Yes, healthcare will be rationed -- but not because of reform; rather, because rationing already takes place today.

Rationing is not new, nor will it be any better or worse under healthcare reform. There is no intent by the President or the Senate or the House to ration healthcare any more than it is already rationed today.

There is no intent for the government to come between a patient and her doctor, nor to make medical decisions for a patient.

That interference today comes from private insurers, not the government. Private insurers too often deny care based on cost -- a form of rationing. That will continue once reform is passed.

Pre-existing Conditions

One way care is rationed today is through denial of coverage and care for people with pre-existing conditions. Once healthcare reform is the law of the land, that denial will go away; people with pre-existing conditions will be able to get insurance to help cover their healthcare costs.

You can learn more about rationing, including self-rationing, to understand better how it affects you today.

Get the facts about healthcare reform, and avoid the disinformation and fear mongering.
