The NIH, National Institutes of Health, is the nation's agency for health research. It has been a part of the federal health landscape for more than 100 years. There are 27 different institutes that provide almost $30 billion in funding to universities, medical schools and research institutions across the country. Each of those funded research studies is intended to improve health and save lives through new discoveries.
The NIH, and the NIH websites are overwhelmingly huge, as are other federal health websites. Not all the information is of use to patients who are researching a diagnosis or treatment. An overview of all its subset websites is found on its FAQs page.
Most of the information found at the NIH website is aimed at those researchers the NIH serves. Specific links of interest to patients are already listed on this section of government health websites.(e.g. ClinicalTrials.gov is part of the NIH).
Other sites of general interest, not specifically about diseases, conditions or treatment would be sites such as those on bioterrorism, stem cell research or general statistics about various medical challenges.
