cyberchondria

Definition: Coined in the late 1990s, the term "cyberchondria" refers to the use of the Internet for self-diagnosis. When the hypochondriac turns to the Internet for health information in order to support his need to prove he has a disease or condition, he is considered to be a cyberchondriac.

Examples:
When Natalie developed a rash on her hand, she began combing the Internet to figure out what it was, and determined it was something far worse than the excema her doctor eventually diagnosed. The doctor accused her of being a cyberchondriac.
