Don't.
If you aren't sure what Yelp is (because it's not found in every location): Yelp is a website where people can rate things: from restaurants to dry cleaners to plumbers to doctors. Customers (or patients) go to the site to talk about their experiences with all those kinds of services and products. Then others can go online to check out the ratings to make decisions about whether they want to eat in those restaurants, get their suits cleaned by that dry cleaner, or have that plumber repair their pipes.
Awhile ago I had written about Yelp in regards to doctors' ratings. Here's how I think their business model works: You, as a consumer, go online to review something - say, a local restaurant. Maybe you had a horrible experience with the taste of your food, or a waiter, or a mouse in your soup. Yelp looks at your bad review, then it goes to the restaurant's owner and says, "hey! For $xxx we will remove that bad review from our website!"
Here's why I think that's their model: Yelp! and Zagat - More Cautionary Review Tales - about the fact that Yelp had removed negative reviews about a doctor in the San Francisco area.
Now - that article was published more than two years ago. I had pretty much forgotten about it, until I happened to read this notice in a blog I read on occasion about local things (I live near Syracuse, NY) about a new burger place that has opened. In the review, I noted:
By the way, I found this pretty interesting. It seems that there were some bad reviews written on a site called Yelp that almost magically disappeared, being left with only one pretty good review.
Oh really? More reviews disappeared from Yelp?
So why do I bring this up on a patient empowerment blog? Because we're hearing much more these days about using doctors' review or ratings sites - and I just don't believe they can be helpful. A doctor's competence cannot be measured by how long a patient waits in the waiting room. And whether or not the staff is friendly doesn't tell much about how accurate a surgeon is.
• Here's more information about doctors' ratings sites and how to use them.
• Here's how to research a doctor's background - information far more accurate and objective.
• And for the purists among you - here's how to choose the best doctor for you.
Unfortunately, I can't help you with ratings for burger places or plumbers. But if you can find the best doctor, then you'll be well enough to do all that on your own.

Always an interesting view! Your introduction mentioned ‘doctors who harm you.’ My situation has gotten quite serious. I had a colonoscopy about 3 weeks ago. I believed in this doctor. Today, my kidney areas have been burning and aching for those same 3 weeks…and this is not my first colonoscopy. His nurse is surprised that I even called back (per doctor’s request). I can only surmise that I have suffered kidney damage. The ‘heat’ and ‘pain’ that come and go may be blood flowing, it may be urine flowing. It falls in line with injury through medical procedure as an excuse. And this situation has developed from the best hospitals, the best doctors, supposedly, the best care that my city offers. All because I took a stand not to be used for someone else’s profit. So, I am to be ……..
abused? While we ‘war’ on elements outside of our country, who will protect us from those who ‘war’ on us as a way to maintain their profits inside of our country?

I found Yelp through another website b/c I was asking members on the other site what I could do about my bad experience with a travel agency, who totally ripped off my husband and I, on our vacation to Disney World last April, to celebrate our anniversary. One gentleman brought to my attention, the web site called Yelp.. I went there and put my review in. Believe it or not, I was the only review there. However, once it picked up momentum, there were so many others that put in their reviews – and should I mention they were ALL bad!!! That travel agency is so shady….
It’s very true that Yelp deletes reviews – including both good ones as well as bad. I wrote one for a now-ex who provided treatment for a pet of mine, and they deleted it because of our relationship! (It’s just as well now, but still.) I’ve also seen bad ones disappear, including one of mine for another business.
Yelp is worse than useless as a result. You can’t trust what’s there to be balanced.
i’m a food server in a fine dining steakhouse in las vegas. when i first learned of yelp i thought it was pretty cool. i did check out some little restaurant joints that had great reviews simply due to the site. but that was short lived. now what i think of yelp is that it’s just plain stupid and wrong. businesses are using their “popularity” on yelp to their benefit.(duh!) but also taking the opinions of these random food reviewers to heart. i mean…wth? most people don’t know which fork is which and what side of you your food should traditionally be served from. i’ve gotten complaints that the bearnaise wasn’t hot. really? a HOT bearnaise? dude..it’s an emulsified sauce…if you don’t know, now google it! but if that person took that complaint to yelp, how many yelpers would know that the sauce will break if it’s too hot and that’s why it’s never served piping hot? my guess is maybe 1 out of 5 would know. but maybe not even 1 out of the 2 would even give it a thought past the rest of the review. the fact of the matter is that yelp is full of amateurs. as a food server, i would never give a bad review even if it was deserved. we have more class than that.
