Computer Print-Outs for Your Doctor? A No No!
The other day, one of the doctors I follow on Twitter sent me this tweet:
@TrishaTorrey A patient in my office the other day had articles from your About section...they had 60 pgs of "data". Was a 45 min visit
Oh my gosh! I was elated! I was so excited! .... and I was horrified, too!
Elated and excited, because that means someone was impressed enough by the information they found here on the patient empowerment site to print it and take it to their doctor.
But horrified -- because one piece of advice you'll find here is to not take computer print outs to your doctor! You really need to leave them at home.
Why not take them? Because your doctor really does not have the time it requires to go over them with you. And because for many doctors (evidently not this one) the suggestion that someone could spend an hour on the internet, and match that against his or her 8+ years of medical school, residency and extended training, is an unspoken insult.
There are definitely ways to share internet health information with your doctor, including information you have found on the Internet. But please play fair with your doctor's time and knowledge. Learn the best ways to share that information and see if you aren't happier with your outcomes.
Here is some information for getting started on Twitter, if you're interested.

That was funny.. Reminds me of circa 2001 when I told a doctor I agreed with his dx because it matched what I had determined about my situation via the Net.. I had to resort to search at the time as I almost lost my Life thru ongoing mismanaged local healthcare as a whole..
Anyway, my doctor got a strange look on his face and said something very short and sweet, albeit it curt, along the lines of well, that’s nice I agreed with him under those circumstances.. Poor guy.. He was the last of a line of professionals I had been being bounced around to at the time.. Ah, memories..
