Rex Morgan (Yes from the Comics) Meets MRSA

Friday June 20, 2008

Yesterday I spoke to a group of senior citizens -- one of my favorite activities because it's always like turning on a lightbulb -- that "aha!" moment I get to observe when they first "get" why they have so much trouble getting the care they need, and when they are empowered with some tools to improve their medical care experiences.

Afterwards, one gentleman asked me if I have been reading the comic, Rex Morgan MD, a staple of the comics in our daily newspaper.

It seems that Rex Morgan has been dealing with MRSA -- Methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus -- that deadly, usually (but not always) hospital-acquired infection. I had no idea MRSA was appearing in the daily comics.

So this morning I checked it out -- and sure enough -- for at least five or six weeks, MRSA has been the topic in relation to the death of a young boy in junior high school.

If you're interested, you can find the Rex Morgan comics here to follow yourself.

Why is this important to patients? It's a learning tool. Kudos to Woody Wilson and Graham Nolan who write the Rex Morgan comic strip. Whatever it takes to get the word out so patients will protect themselves -- I'm all for it.
