National Patient Safety Week and an Offer for You

Monday March 3, 2008

The first week in March heralds National Patient Safety Awareness Week. Sponsored annually by the National Patient Safety Foundation, the hope is that we patients and our providers will step back, give a second (or more) thought to safe health and medical practices, and realize that we all play a role in safety.

Drug or medication errors, surgical errors, MRSA and other hospital acquired infections; these are all safety problems that can occur both in healthcare facilities and in our homes.

The National Quality Forum, in conjunction with the US Department of Health and Human Services, issued a master list of "never events" that patients and providers need to be aware of, and need to take steps to avoid.

Each year, the National Patient Safety Foundation holds a Congress to move the conversation forward and to help all participants in healthcare from practitioners to payers, learn better ways of avoiding medical errors.

This year's program will be held in Nashville, Tennessee in May. In recognition of National Patient Safety Week, the NPSF is inviting applications for scholarships for patients and families to attend its Congress. YOU are invited to apply!

Whether you can attend the Congress or not, when you are in the process of seeking care, make yourself familiar with the list of never events. Talk to your providers about it. And do whatever it takes to make sure you don't become a victim.
