Celebrity Apprentice, Trace Adkins, the 80/20 Rule, and Healthcare Takeaways
Whether or not you are a fan of Donald Trump or his TV show, Celebrity Apprentice, the past two weeks have provided a wonderful lesson for navigating healthcare.
Trace Adkins, a country singer who, yes, I had heard of, but knew nothing about, gets the credit for today's blog post. In the past two tasks he has conducted himself exactly as any smart patient would conduct his/herself when faced with decision-making about a medical problem.
How? Simple. By listening. Yes -- that simple.
Further, he sets the bar for any good medical professional. He has conducted himself exactly as any smart medical professional would conduct him/herself with a patient who needs diagnosis and treatment decision-making guidance.
How? Once again - by listening.
Here's how Trace conducted himself: The task was assigned, he listened to the task. An analysis of what was needed by his team was reviewed. Trace listened. Ideas were bandied about. Trace asked a few questions and listened to the answers. Then, when he finally opened his mouth -- both weeks, for both tasks -- his answer was spot on, creative, sewed up all the needs -- and his ideas were used by his team. Brilliant in its simplicity.
... and an example of the 80/20 rule, too. If I had to put percentages to his skills, he listens 80% of the time, and talks 20% of the time -- and both he and his team benefited in a huge way by that skill.
A call to EARS for both medical professionals and patients! Listen listen listen! At least 80% of the time.
