Oh sure -- I know -- two topics that seem so totally unrelated to each other, right? (As in -- look at this woman, trying to take advantage of an American iconic event, just to promote her patient empowerment ideas?)
Yes -- but it will make perfect sense in a moment.
Think of the Superbowl as the healthcare battle ground. The opposing team is your diagnosed disease or condition. We'll call it Team DC.
Your team is just that -- the group battling Team DC. Your team is Team You.
Team DC is trying to carry the ball to its goal, which is destruction of your health.
Team You is trying to carry the ball to your goal: total health, or at least management of your disease.
From here, the metaphor becomes pretty obvious, right? Think through your team: the doctors, specialists, other practitioners, pharmacist, even fellow patients -- those who can provide real assistance, and support you in your quest for your goal -- regaining your health.
And here are the key players on your team:
YOU are the quarterback! You call the plays, you guide the team, you step back and let them do their work, carrying your ball to your goal.
Your doctor is your coach. S/he trains you to do what needs to be done, but you are still the one who stands in the middle of the field to call the shots. (Remembering, of course, that YOU are always the final decision-maker when it comes to your own medical care.)
We can even take it a bit further. Team You scores! -- you get healthier every time the ball goes across the goal line. If you run into some defense from Team DC -- well -- try to get your field goal, regroup, and march down the field again when you get control of the ball.
You've even got cheerleaders! Your family and friends who support and encourage you as you play this very important game of life.
Get the metaphor now? Fighting your medical challenges is done as a team, with a common enemy. That enemy, your disease or condition, can so often be defeated by using teamwork... the Superbowl in YOUR life.
Oh, yes, and let's not forget the commercials.... Remember that they are simply a diversion from the real game. Hmmm... maybe they are the metaphor for health insurance?... but.... let's not go there.
Enjoy the game this weekend, and think about the metaphorical promise it holds for your health, too!
